The Rich History of
William Land Golf Course

About us

Established in 1924, William Land Golf Course stands as one of Sacramento’s oldest recreational landmarks. The course was created as part of philanthropist William Land’s vision to provide accessible green spaces for the growing city. His generous bequest to the city in 1911 led to the development of William Land Park, with the golf course opening thirteen years later.

Design and Development

The original course was designed by Scottish architect William Bell, known for his naturalistic approach to golf course design. Bell worked with the existing landscape, incorporating mature oak trees and natural contours to create a challenging yet accessible course. Initially opened as a full 18-hole course, it was later reconfigured to the 9-hole executive course that exists today.

A Community Institution

Throughout the Great Depression, William Land Golf Course served as an affordable recreational outlet for Sacramento residents. During World War II, the course hosted charity tournaments to raise funds for the war effort, cementing its place in local civic life.

Legacy

As one of California’s oldest continuously operating municipal golf courses, William Land Golf Course remains true to its founder’s vision of providing recreational opportunities for all Sacramento residents, regardless of background or economic status. It stands as a living testament to Sacramento’s commitment to preserving green spaces within its urban landscape.

Notable Moments

In 1952, the course hosted an exhibition match featuring golf legend Sam Snead, drawing the largest crowd in the facility’s history. The 1960s saw course improvements including a modernized irrigation system and clubhouse renovations.

Preservation Efforts

By the 1980s, urban development pressures threatened the course’s future. A grassroots “Save the Land” campaign mobilized community support, resulting in the course’s designation as a historic recreational site in 1987, protecting it from commercial development.

Modern Era

Today’s William Land Golf Course maintains its commitment to accessibility while embracing modern golf standards. Recent sustainability initiatives have reduced water usage by 30% while maintaining playable conditions. The course now serves over 40,000 rounds annually and hosts the popular “First Tee” program, introducing golf to underserved youth in Sacramento.
